Teaching and Learning Environment
Student’s well-being is vitally important and as a teacher there is a responsibility to ensure students feel happy, safe and healthy in the classroom. To promote well-being within the classroom, students createrules and a class treaty to have ownership of their behaviour and learning. This helps promote students safety and comfort. Throughout the daily learning of the classroom discussions about well-being and students feelings are held when any incidents arise.
The learning environment in terms of format is initially structured how I want it with desks and learning areas placed where I want them. But as the term nears the end I allow children to decide their learning area with the condition that they still complete set tasks to a high standard. Children have the opportunity through different learning programmes to choose learning areas that best suit them.
In our daily practice we participate in fitness and P.E to promote a healthy wellbeing. Students enjoy competition and challenges when it comes to physical activity so ensuring students get regular exercise and a chance to express themselves is important.
As most classrooms can be bicultural or multicultural it is important to acknowledge and respect the different cultures within it. This can be done by incorporating languages (roll greetings), values and other aspects within daily practice. This gives students a chance to learn about a new culture and for students to share something about themselves.
As the classroom teacher of Year 2 students it is important that I make them feel safe within the classroom environment and the school environment as a whole. I try to support and improve social interactions, healthy eating, self care conflict resolution and general well being of all akonga.
This is by having learning conversations, learning activities, supporting guest speakers and modelling.
