In my teaching, how do I take into account the bicultural context of teaching and learning in Aotearoa New Zealand?

In my teaching I endeavour to be inclusive and open to all cultures within the school and the classroom. In New Zealand, the Maori culture within schools is highly valued and focussed on and my teaching practice is no different. Rhode Street School is predominantly Maori so it is important to incorporate their traditions, culture, values and language. I have listed different aspects of how I accommodate and address Te Reo Maori within my classroom at the top of this statement.

I grow my teaching knowledge and attempt to create learning programmes that fulfil and help Maori and Pakeha students collectively. I try to make learning interesting, rewarding and fun.

Student’s educational aspirations are very significant and are constantly evaluated and monitored. As a teacher in a bicultural classroom it is important to acknowledge and set learning goals and targets that can be achieved so students can see progress and feel success. This is done by displaying targets for literacy and numeracy and ensuring students are aware of what is needed to achieve and move up the ladder. One on one discussions and feedback, comments in work books and goal setting are methods to help students achieve their learning aspirations.
